Cordon and search is a daunting task in the contemporary operational environment (COE). Our leaders, Soldiers, and units must be able to readily adapt and seize advantages to meet mission objectives. Cordon and search missions are critical tasks that commanders and staffs must concisely plan, prepare, and execute. Careful consideration of followon effects is crucial, especially during the stability operations and support operations (SOSO) phase. It is difficult to strike a balance between targeting potential belligerents and safeguarding and winning the hearts and minds of noncombatants. Achieving this balance is a challenge we must overcome as we continue our relentless assault on the global war on terrorism. LAWRENCE H.
